Club History

When, in the Autumn and Winter of 1927, a group of men (and some women) got together to discuss the construction of a golf course at Mount Lawley on the then northern periphery of Perth, they came together against a backdrop of increasing economic uncertainty. Perth was undoubtedly growing and sport had certainly already won a central place in many Australian hearts. Golf must have its due.

So through 1927 and 1928 the Club and the course gradually took shape, with the latter year becoming the one established as marking Mount Lawley Golf Club’s foundation.

In 2011, the Club published “from humble beginnings … THE MOUNT LAWLEY GOLF CLUB” which chronicles the Club’s history – from the spark of an idea shared by Mount Lawley neighbours in 1927, to the wonderful course and facilities that members enjoy in the new millennium.

Internationally renowned author and historian Richard Bosworth leads off with an entertaining and at times provocative narrative on the Club’s development. As a history academic, Richard provides an interesting global backdrop to the story of Mount Lawley.

The golf course is showcased in the second part, with stunning colour photographs to compliment the black and white images that survive from the 1930’s and 40’s. A brief history of each hole and how it is played today will provide the reader with a sense of the Mount Lawley golfing experience.

A collection of stories about the events and people that have have shaped the club makes up the third part of the book. It highlights the key events, the characters and the achievers that form the essence of the Mount Lawley Golf Club.

Finally, the “Rolls of Honour” acknowledge the office bearers and achievers that are recorded on the Club’s honour boards.
