The prestigious Marie Westlake Trophy brought out the competitive spirit in all the GPL players. Not only did they want to do well for their team, this week there was the added pressure of desperately wanting their name on the trophy.

The Iron Ladies brought in the Trophy Winner Susan Zhang with a magnificent 38 points and a team victory by 2 points over the Par Tee Girls. The Ladies scored 137 for the second week in a row. This week the fickle finger of fate meant they were winners, not losers. Connie Bonakey was strong support with 35, birthday girl Robyn Quinn got in on the act with a very handy 32, the same as Alison Lynch. On any other day, the Par Tee Girls could have been winners with a not too shabby score of 135. Audrey Gibb was team leader with 36, plus Jennifer Stott’s 34, Alison Beech on 33 and Barb Cotton with 33. Great scores but not enough against the iron willed Iron Ladies.

The Par Tees had another great day out and breezed to victory over Cherry’s Champs. Ronny Brown led the way with 36, followed by a return to form Robyn Allpike (35), Elaine Woodard on 33 and Kaye Wolfe on 32 to give them a very creditable 136. Cherry’s Champs had scores in the 30s – Debra Majteles, Annette Kidd & Jenny Thew with 31 and Yuko Lucas & Cherry Skinner with 30 – but their 123 point total left them wallowing in the wake of the league leaders by 13 points.

Parfection had a very welcome return to the winner’s circle thanks to 37 points from the day’s Runner-up, Claire Johnson, and 33 by Michelle Marinovich.  Erica Warren (28) and Maria O’Keefe (28) made sure they got over the line against the Swinging Divas. The Divas June Brindley performed well with 34 points and Dotty Chaine gave them hope with 31, but team numbers were down and they couldn’t post any more scores over 30. Week after week, the Divas look like they will grab another win but just can’t manage to snatch the points. Still they live in hope….there’s always next week.

The Glamour Pusses preened themselves to a victory by the narrowest of margins. They did just enough to win against the Golden Girls without tangling their fur or chipping a nail. Di Lloyd and Karen Bond dazzled for the Girls with 34 points apiece – both moaned about missed putts and points that were left out on the course. Eldred Day (28) and Sue Richardson (26) contributed but it was going to be tough against the fancy felines. They purred their way contentedly to a one point win with Cindy Stobart, Tracy Silbert and Gail Crispin on 31 each, plus Suzanne Bradsher on 30.

Fore Tee Plus’ Maureen Jennings was swanning about in Bali sending photos of poolside cocktails and white sand beaches under tropical sun – expecting the team to bring in a win without her. The players must have had everything crossed when they came in with a total of 119 thanks to Kate Divitini (34), Vyv Blyton (33), Anne Gelavis (27) and then the pick of newcomer Lucy Shi, Lesley Smith and Marie Westlake all with 25. The Birdies were all a twitter after Maxine Bagley scored 31 and Sharon Dean scored 30….there was a chance to take the points. Unfortunately, with five of their team away, their wings were clipped and they could only manage a total of 108. It was another win to Fore Tee Plus!

When the dust settled at the end of the round, The Par Tees are still out in front with Parfection looking over their shoulders in second. Glamour Pusses, the Par Tee Girls and The Iron Ladies are all tied on 24 points, with the Ladies just outside the top 4 by the smallest of margins. Fore Tee Plus were the big movers this week, zooming up to sixth place and within sight of the top 4. They are closely followed by the Golden Girls and The Birdies tied on points. Cherry’s Champs and the Swinging Divas fill the bottom two places but there are matches left and plenty to play for.

Next week is the clash of the league leaders. Parfection will be hoping to repeat their previous performance and knock off the Par Tees again. They are the only team to beat them so far this year. Probably more than one of the other teams will be secretly barracking for them on the day….we’ll see! The Par Tees are a force to be reckoned with at the moment. Glamour Pusses will want to take the points from the Par Tee Girls and secure their place on the ladder. Fore Tee Plus will want to show the returning Maureen that their win was not a fluke in her absence but The Iron Ladies have steely resolve and won’t give up the points easily. The Golden Girls take on the Swinging Divas who must be wondering when luck will go their way and they can get a win. We all know that birds love fruit and the Birdies will be hoping to feast on Cherry’s Champs next week in Round 12.

Welcome back Maureen. Hope you enjoyed your holiday!
